Mobile or landline checker

Carrier data: NANPA/CNAC files as of 2026-11-03 · FTC complaint files through 2026-11-03 · FCC complaints through 2026-11-02

Check one number or a whole list and find out which are cell phones before you send an SMS campaign. Paste or upload up to 50 numbers - free, no signup. Each one comes back mobile, landline or VoIP, with its carrier and whether the number is valid at all. Download the full result as CSV, or only the mobile numbers. US and Canadian numbers are classified by the carrier that holds the number block in public NANPA/CNAC records - ported numbers are not detected, and about 12% of assigned numbers sit in blocks held by carriers we cannot classify (fixed_or_mobile). Most numbers in real lists fall in blocks we can classify, though: typically under 1% of a US list comes back as fixed_or_mobile.

Up to 50 rows per check, a few checks per hour. Numbers checked here are not stored. Bigger lists: enter your email under the result to check up to 10,000 numbers in a free account, or get a free API key. One number with the full risk breakdown: phone number validator.

How the line type is found

Every US and Canadian phone number belongs to a block of numbers assigned to one carrier, recorded in the public NANPA (US) and CNAC (Canada) numbering files. The carrier that holds the block determines the line type: a block held by Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile or AT&T Mobility is mobile, one held by a local phone or cable company is landline, one held by Bandwidth, Twilio or Telnyx is VoIP. We can identify the line type for about 88% of assigned US and Canadian numbers; for the rest the result says fixed_or_mobile.

Outside North America the line type comes from the national numbering plan (Google's libphonenumber data), where mobile and landline numbers use separate ranges.

The limit: a number moved to another carrier (ported) keeps its original block, so a landline ported to a mobile carrier still shows as landline. Detecting ported numbers needs a paid real-time lookup, which this check does not do.

FAQ

Can I check if a number is a cell phone for free?

Yes. Up to 50 numbers per check on this page, no signup. For a whole list (up to 10,000 numbers), enter your email under the result and we will send you a link that creates an account and checks every number - free, with no monthly limit during early access. Longer lists: upload more files from your account.

Why remove landlines before an SMS campaign?

Most landlines cannot receive a text message, so a text sent to one is wasted. Taking them out first keeps your campaign on numbers that can actually receive texts. The MOBILE ONLY download keeps only numbers confirmed mobile - landlines, VoIP and numbers of unknown type are left out, so review those in the full CSV.

How accurate is it?

It is as accurate as the numbering records: correct for any number still with the carrier its block was assigned to. Ported numbers keep the type of their original block, and about 12% of assigned US and Canadian numbers sit in blocks held by carriers we cannot classify (fixed_or_mobile). In a typical US list, under 1% of numbers come back as fixed_or_mobile.

Does it tell me if the number is still in service?

No. Valid means the number fits an assigned range, not that someone answers it. Finding disconnected numbers needs a paid real-time (HLR) lookup, which this check does not do.

Do you store the numbers I check?

The free check runs in memory and the result goes straight back to your browser - only a count of checks is kept. A whole list checked through the email link is saved in your account so you can download the result again; results are deleted after 7 days. If you don't click the link, the list is deleted within two hours.

More than 50 numbers?

Enter your email under the result and the whole list is checked in a free account - up to 10,000 numbers per file, no monthly limit during early access, no credit card. Longer list? Split it into files and upload each in your dashboard, or email us to send one big file. Need the same data by API? Get a free key.
